First Memories

It’s been about twenty years since I first sat down at a computer and discovered this thing called the internet. Can you remember the old modem sound? Do you even want to???

My first venture online was to Yahoo on the old Netscape browser. I remember being very interested in the types of websites out there. I was fascinated by websites for my favorite sports teams, and the new levels of information available. I could download schedules, photos, results and highlights, rosters, all kinds of stuff! To think of it now it’s no big deal, but that first visit to http://www.hurricanes.com was so neat.

The other thing that interested me was a question… how can I make something like this? How can I make this useful? I started looking for NJROTC websites, and to my surprise, i didn’t find many. After speaking with my Naval Science Instructor, I was given permission to explore the process, and ultimately allowed to create a website for our unit. I learned some HTML coding and created a homepage on angelfire.com. I really enjoyed being the first webmaster for our unit.

Here’s the sad thing: The website I started still exists in some form http://www.angelfire.com/nj4/bynjrotc

The Unit was disestablished in 2013. Only our photos, our memories, the lessons learned, and the website remain.
